Chicken Coop For The Soul

This is Herb (in blue tee.) We go back a very long way and haven't seen each other in 35 years. Facebook does wonderful things and this is just one example. We got together in LA to build his amazing daughter a chicken coop. Jess got to hear stories about her dad that could have only been told at this time in her life and during a project like this. So this isn't just any old chicken coop.

Moving Inside The Laguna Beach Single Wall

click on the photo to enlarge and have a close look. Not a stud in the walls anywhere. It's like working on a tree house. Tons of original furniture too. Just the neatest place.

Single Wall Construction

Started in 1934 by a couple of brothers who were football coaches in Pasadena Ca. and would come down in the summers to work on it. They would bring students that wanted to help and also hang out at the beach and camp. This was near the beginning of the Bohemian Art Colony thing that Laguna Beach is known for.
The construction is very simple and from the outside it doesn't look like much but the inside shows how wonderful this house really is.

The walls are 3/4"x10" tongue a groove redwood boards 8' tall nailed to a 2"x4" bottom and top plate stood up and that's it. No studs at all in this house supporting a complex hip roof. Also its a Duplex that has been opened up to create a single family home but both kitchens are still intact.
I'm thrilled to be working on this home and have even dropped our rate to make it more affordable to be a part of this house's restoration and upkeep.
This project also qualifies for the "awesome view discount" which is 30 minutes deducted from my time spent each day here since I catch myself gazing often.
